How Many Fence Posts Do I Need?

A practical way to estimate fence post count from run length, spacing, corners, ends and gates.

A simple post-count formula

For a simple straight run, start with the run length divided by your nominal spacing, then add the terminal and gate posts your layout requires. Real layouts get more complicated when you add corners, changes of direction and gates.

Example: a 150-foot straight run at roughly 8-foot spacing gives about 19 intervals. That means you will need more than 19 physical posts once you account for ends and the framing needed for gates.

Why spacing is not a universal rule

Manufacturers can specify different spacing depending on the fence system, panel dimensions, wind exposure and post strength. A preassembled panel fence is also different from a stick-built wood fence. That is why the calculator gives a starter count rather than pretending to be a construction plan.

Best workflow

  1. Measure the total fence run.
  2. Draw the corners, ends and gates.
  3. Use your fence system’s recommended post spacing.
  4. Run the number through the calculator.
  5. Compare the result with the manufacturer’s installation guide.

Use the Fence Post Calculator for a fast first pass, then verify the actual system before ordering.
